Classic Russian Short Stories, Volume 1 (Unabridged)

By: Alexander Pushkin, Nikolai Gogol, Ivan Turgenev, Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Audio Length: 4 hours and 37 min.
Avg. Cust. Rating: 4.19 out of 5.0

Russian literature exudes an atmosphere of mysticism, which is said to be a natural result of the simplicity of her people. Often, instead of being "about" anything, Russian stories sometimes seem to be the "thing" in itself. Be this as it may, it is an undeniable fact that with hardly any portent of future greatness to come, Russian literature suddenly sprang fully developed into existence in the 19th century. One after another, from Pushkin to Chekhov, some of the greatest writers who have ever lived emerged from the steppes, forests, and cities of Mother Russia.
Selections in Volume I:

In "The Shot", by Alexander Pushkin, a duel is postponed so that it may be continued at a more propitious time.

"The Overcoat", by Nikolai Gogol, is the hilarious tale of a lowly bureaucrat who suddenly finds himself in need of a new overcoat.

"The Tryst", by Ivan Turgenev, is a gorgeous, masterfully written first person narrative of a hunter who overhears two young people: one who loves and one who does not.

In "The Wedding", by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, when a man is invited to a children's ball, he witnesses an amazing incident. Five years later, a posh wedding clarifies everything.

In "A Prisoner in the Caucasus", by Leo Tolstoy, Tartar rebels take a Russian officer prisoner in order to collect a ransom. But the officer's one thought throughout his cruel ordeal is to escape.

In "An Upheaval", by Anton Chekhov, a young governess accused of theft learns the identity of the real culprit

The Willows - by Algernon Blackwood - Classic Tale of the Supernatural - BBC Audiobook - cheops

"After leaving Vienna, and long before you come to Budapest, the Danube enters a region of singular loneliness and desolation, where its waters spread away on all sides regardless of a main channel, and the country becomes a swamp for miles upon miles, covered by a vast sea of low willow-bushes...."

Algernon Blackwood is regarded as the Twentieth Century’s foremost British writer of supernatural fiction, and ‘The Willows’ has often been rated as the finest single supernatural story in English. One of Blackwood’s foremost admirers, H.P.Lovecraft, said of him: ‘he is the one absolute and unquestioned master of weird atmosphere …can evoke what amounts almost to a story from a simple fragment of psychological description. Above all others he understands how fully some sensitive minds dwell for ever on the borderland of dream, and how relatively slight is the distinction betwixt those images formed from actual objects and those excited by the play of the imagination’.

‘The Willows’ (written in 1907) builds up an atmosphere of almost unbearable suspense from the simple situation of two friends on a canoeing trip down the Danube, who decide to spend the night on a small island in a remote stretch of the river between Austria and Hungary. Little by little, they realise that malevolent supernatural forces, embodied by the island’s ubiquitous rustling willow trees, are at work against them, and what at first promises to be a straightforward camping expedition escalates into an ordeal of survival against a powerful agency from another dimension.

Four episodes of 30 minutes each read by Roger Allam.

The much loved cricket commentator Brian Johnston performs his hilarious 1993 one-man show at London\'s Richmond Theatre.

In 1993, at the age of 80, Brian Johnston embarked on his first ever concert tour, a one-man show called "An Evening With Johnners", which blended stories about his life with the many jokes and puns for which he was renowned.

Two recordings were made from it - "An Evening With Johnners" and "An Hour With Johnners".

The years at the BBC provided him with a fund of glorious memories and anecdotes, the best of which he describes here in his inimitable style. Some, such as the famous "leg-over" incident with co-commentator Jonathan Agnew, have gone down in broadcasting history; others are less well known and will be discovered for the first time here; all, however, are a pleasure to savour and will provide his many fans with a unique opportunity to sit down and enjoy An Hour With Johnners.

iPod Audiobook - Duel - Richard Matheson - M4B-128k - BBC Radio - cheops

An Audiobook of the Richard Matheson`s 1971 classic read by Nathan Osgood.

David Mann is just what his name suggests: an everyman with a mediocre job who has trouble standing up for himself. While driving through the desert to an important appointment, he passes a slow-moving, rusty tanker truck. The driver proves to have a severe case of road rage and takes offense at this action, devoting the rest of his day purely to killing Mann. The malevolent driver is never seen, giving the impression that it\'s the truck itself that is the agressor.

This short story from Matheson was rewritten by him as the screenplay of the 1971 movie that launched Steven Spielberg\'s career.

One M4B audiobook file (with incorporated cover image) containing two episodes of approximately thirty minutes each.

First broadcast in 2006 on BBC Radio.

Ancient Sorceries - by Algernon Blackwood - Classic Tale of The Supernatural - BBC Audiobook - cheops

Ancient Sorceries is arguably the finest tale in Algernon Blackwood\\\'s 1908 collection \\\'John Silence: Physician Extraordinary\\\'.

Arthur Vezin is a quiet, unassuming man with an incredible story. While on a train in northern France headed home from a vacation, Vezin has the sudden, uncontrollable urge to get off the train. As he is disembarking, another passenger warns him in French something about sleeping and cats. Vezin disregards the advice and continues on towards a quiet little hill town to find an inn to stay overnight.

There is something wrong with the people of the town – with the whole town itself – but Vezin can’t quite figure it out. After a pleasant night’s sleep, Vezin can’t make himself leave in the morning. Something is inexplicably holding him there. When the proprietress’ beautiful daughter begins to seduce Vezin to stay, he vows to uncover the mysteries of the townspeople – with terrifying results...

This unabridged four part reading was commissioned especially for BBC7, and is read by Philip Madoc.

Then they came to Earth and amnesia set in: they forgot they were from different planets. Using this metaphor to illustrate the commonly occurring conflicts between men and women, Dr. John Gray explains how these differences can come between the sexes and prohibit mutually fulfilling, loving relationships. Based on years of successful counseling of couples and individuals, he gives advice on how to counteract these differences in communication styles, emotional needs and modes of behavior to promote a greater understanding between individual partners. Now available in its complete, unabridged form, Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus is an invaluable tool for developing deeper and more satisfying relationships.
